The Food Safety Consortium has called on the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to extend a proposed ruling on irradiation to include precooked meats. The current proposal issued by the USDA only allows irradiation for refrigerated or frozen uncooked meats.
The American Medical Association, the American Public Health Association, the American Dietetic Association, and several other public health organizations endorse irradiation as a means of preventing foodborne illness. More information on the Food Safety Consortium's irradiation policy can be found at http://www.uark.edu/depts/fsc/42299release.html.
