Ira Garelick, Chapter President
On 26 January 2022, the New Jersey Chapter held a Zoom scientific meeting with the topic "Emerging Technologies Using Unsealed Radioactivity in Veterinary Medicine." Chad Smith, PhD, CHP, from FX Masse Associates, Inc., spoke on the use of two recently introduced agents for treating illnesses in dogs and cats. One agent, using Sn-117m, is used to treat arthritis and is injected directly into joints. The second, using 90Y microspheres, is used to treat certain tumors. Unlike 90Y treatment in humans, which involves the use of catheters, the microspheres are introduced directly into the tumors.
Smith reviewed his work in getting these products approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and several agreement states. He also discussed radiation safety considerations and future use of these and similar projects. It was a fascinating presentation that our 24 participants thoroughly enjoyed!
