The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is looking for potential volunteers from academia who are willing to serve as technical reviewers to evaluate the FY2022 research grant proposals in the following subject areas:
- Advanced construction techniques for nuclear builds
- Advanced materials and manufacturing for nuclear applications
- Digital engineering/analytics, advanced sensors, and controls for nuclear applications
- Human and organizational factors and human reliability analysis for nuclear applications
- Risk analysis and probabilistic risk assessment for nuclear applications
- Advanced technology approaches (e.g., A/ML)
- Characterization of fresh and spent nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants
- Safety analyses for reactor designs and fuel cycle technologies
This year, the NRC is expected to award approximately $6M and anticipates there may be up to 12 grants awarded. The NRC's grant program provides funding to support research and development for nuclear science, engineering, technology, and related disciplines to develop a workforce capable of supporting the design, construction, operation, and regulation of nuclear facilities and the safe handling of nuclear materials. With your support we can ensure that grant proposals are properly evaluated and are relevant to the programmatic mission of the NRC.
The estimated time frame for the review process to start is during the week of 2 May. Reviewers will have approximately two weeks to review proposals and then another week to participate in a review panel teleconference. It is estimated that 8–10 proposals will be assigned to each review panel.
Please submit names of interested individuals and which subject areas they can support to Nancy Hebron-Isreal no later than 22 April.
