Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson announced that Dr. Carolyn L. Huntoon was sworn in on July 13 as Assistant Secretary for the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM). Dr. Huntoon was confirmed by the Untied States Senate on July 1. In this position, Dr. Huntoon will oversee the Department's cleanup of the nation's nuclear weapons complex and other DOE sites, and will manage an EM budget of almost $6 billion. In addition, under a reorganization announced on April 21 by Secretary Richardson, site managers for DOE's Idaho, Savannah River and Richland, and Ohio and Rocky Flats field offices and the Director of Richland's Office of River Protection will report directly to Dr. Huntoon.
