Ira Garelick, Chapter President
On Tuesday, 21 June 2022, the New Jersey Chapter met "live and in person" for the first time in 2½ years! The meeting began with a lively social gathering at a local microbrewery, with delicious food provided by the adjacent take-out seafood restaurant.
We then settled in to hear a presentation from Ruben Papraniku of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's (NJDEP) Bureau of Nuclear Engineering. Ruben's presentation was titled "Radiological Monitoring and Air Sampling After a Power Plant Release" and his topics included:
- The NJDEP's capabilities/procedures to gather post-release field data.
- Accessing and performing air sampling in rough terrain.
- Continuous air sampling systems in four-wheel drive vehicles.
- Efficiency of sample collection, analysis, and minimizing worker plume exposure.
- Evaluating radioiodine and particulates with Thermo AMS4/OPT7/FH40 equipment.
There was a lively interactive discussion with Ruben and the attendees, including the role of various state and federal agencies. Ruben showcased, through pictures, the fleet of vehicles NJDEP uses for drills and should an actual power plant release occur.
It was a great evening to meet and greet and interact in a non-Zoom setting!
