Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Geiger Counters course through its MIT OpenCourseWare program online.
This course is an introduction to nuclear science and engineering at MIT. Students are taught to build and test their own Geiger counter, and so doing, they explore different types and sources of radiation, how to detect them, how to shield them, and how to accurately count/measure their activity, and they explore cryptographical applications of radiation.
MIT OpenCourseWare OCW is a free and open collection of material from thousands of MIT courses, covering the entire MIT curriculum. Use OCW to guide your own lifelong learning or to teach others. MIT does not offer credit or certification to users of OCW and asks for nothing in return. There is no enrollment or registration required and files can be downloaded for later use.
