Tour the Nuclear Ship Savannah (NSS), Baltimore Harbor, Maryland
Yes, we've saved the best for last! We have arranged for a tour of the Nuclear Ship Savannah (NSS) on Thursday, 27 July. A registered National Historic Landmark and the world's first nuclear-powered merchant ship, the NSS was launched in 1959 to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy as part of the Atoms for Peace Program. After the NSS completed its mission, the ship was removed from service and the reactor was defueled.
The ship is getting closer and closer to being fully decommissioned. While the future of NSS is still to be determined, the BWCHPS is excited to offer a private tour! This is possibly your last chance to see the NSS in person!
The ship is docked in Baltimore Harbor. We plan to depart the hotel at 7:30 am and return no later than 4:00 pm. The ticket price is $70.00 per person, which includes transportation and a light lunch.
NEST Aerial Measurement System
Finally, the LAC, working with members from National Nuclear Security Administration's Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST), has arranged for the "fly-in" of the Aerial Measuring System (AMS) helicopter. NEST radiation detection systems will be on display. NEST staff from Joint Base Andrews will be present.
