The Cincinnati Radiation Society (CRS) Chapter of the Health Physics Society (HPS) met on Thursday, 6 April 2023, to hear Doug Draper present on the "Those Darned Cambridge Sources, Story of a Radiological Team Callout."

In 1992, the Department of Energy (DOE) and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) agreed that DOE Office of Environmental Management would take responsibility for radioactive sources that NRC had identified as a threat to public health and safety. The first implementation of this agreement occurred soon after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the agencies. As it turns out, the Mound Radiological Assistance Team was given the task of retrieving sources that NRC had identified at a location in Cambridge, Ohio. Because policy, procedures, organization, and resources for implementation of the MOU had not been developed by the agencies, considerable effort was necessary for final disposition. The presentation discussed what happened next.
