"Change Your Irradiator! How ORS Can Help You Eliminate Radiological Terrorism Risk and Pitch to Your Stakeholders" will be presented by Carolyn MacKenzie, Tara Medich, and Kevin Kenney.
Abstract: Devices containing dangerous amounts of radioactive material provide many benefits like allowing for safer blood transfusions or innovative research into cancer treatments. They also pose risks. This radioactive material, if stolen, could be incredibly dangerous in the hands of terrorists seeking to make a radiological dispersal device or "dirty bomb." Learn from the Department of Energy (DOE) how you can achieve permanent risk reduction through the DOE Cesium Irradiator Replacement Project (CIRP) and hear about university and hospital stakeholder engagement, decision-making processes, and experiences with the project. Also learn about the assistance offered by the Offsite Source Recovery Program in the removal and disposition of cesium-137 irradiators included in CIRP. Discuss the importance of engaging the right members of your organization, financial incentives, and planning for the logistics and operational changes associated with transition to an x-ray irradiator.
