National Academies Seeking Experts for New Study on Electron-Beam Technologies

Wayne Glines, Health Physics News Contributing Editor

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is seeking suggestions for experts to participate in the new study Assessing Opportunities and Challenges for Expanded Use of U.S.-Based Electron-Beam Technologies. The study will examine options for broader use of e-beam technologies; identify priority research needs to improve reliability, flexibility, and efficiency; and discuss challenges and solutions for transitioning R&D to commercial-scale uses.

Using these suggestions, National Academies staff will be looking to build a committee of approximately 12 volunteer experts with current or past experience from academic and research institutions, industrial sectors, and regulatory agencies. With this call for nominations, National Academies staff will be collecting information for potential study briefers and peer reviewers for any publications resulting from the activity.

Nominations are requested for individuals with expertise in areas and disciplines in the following areas:

  • Technologies for sterilization and irradiation including ethylene oxide fumigation, gamma irradiation, e-beam irradiation, and x-ray irradiation.
  • Radiological security.
  • Accelerator technology.
  • Public-private partnerships in technology development.
  • Policy development.
  • Life-cycle assessments.

Expertise will span areas such as medical device sterilization, food safety, pest management, and environmental applications of irradiation technologies for this multidisciplinary committee. For more information, view the nomination form.

We invite you to submit your suggestions by 22 October 2024.
